‘Video nasty’ carer has sentence cut on appeal

A CARER who filmed a semi-naked elderly man having his incontinence pad changed and encouraged another to swear has had her year-long jail sentence cut in half.

Eileen Sta Maria, 24, was sent to prison by magistrates in Eastbourne last month after she left her iPhone on a train and a member of the public handed it in to police having spotted three film clips of residents at the Bupa-run Elstree Court Nursing Home.

Sta Maria, of Hartfield Road, was dismissed from the care home for the incident and Bupa described it as ‘appalling’.

One of the clips showed a semi-naked man having an incontinence pad changed and magistrates heard more than the necessary amount of staff were in the room at the time. Another heard her encouraging a woman to swear.

Christos Christou, defending Sta Maria when she was convicted at Eastbourne Magistrates Court last month, said, “She expressed remorse in her report and wishes to apologise to the victims and their families.”

But magistrates sentenced her to four months in jail for each offence to run consecutively.

However, last Friday (August 5), Sta Maria appealed against her sentence at Lewes Crown Court.

Her appeal was heard by Judge Richard Hayward and he reduced her prison sentence to six months.
