Teenage thieves caught on store’s CCTV

THREE teenage boys have been charged with stealing more than £800 worth of beauty products, a court heard.

Ben Eastwood, 18, of Ashgate Road, appearing at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 25 with two minors, pleaded guilty to stuffing hair straighteners and razors up his jumper and fleeing the supermarket.

A 16-year-old boy also admitted helping steal £837 worth of products from Asda in the Crumbles retail park at 3am on October 26. Another 16-year-old boy pleaded not guilty to the theft.

Tim Stirmey, defending Eastwood, said the 18-year-old had been drinking heavily to celebrate his birthday and could not remember stealing the grooming products.

Mr Stirmey said, “The items they stole are completely useless to the people who stole them at the end of the day.

“They woke up with a stinking hangover with none of the goods on their person.

“It’s a complete and utter waste of time and a stupid offence.”

A night-time security guard was on his 15-minute break when he received a call from the store’s duty manager saying thieves were raiding the store.

He did not manage to stop them but close circuit television footage showed four men raiding the shelves and running from the supermarket.

The 16-year-old who pleaded guilty was released on unconditional bail until February 15 when he will be dealt with in youth court. The other minor was also released on unconditional bail until April 14.

Eastwood, who also pleaded guilty to using a bus pass belonging to another, was handed a 16-week community order, made to pay £220 to Asda and magistrates imposed a curfew between 8pm and 5.30am.
