A PIE shop owner is warning fellow businessmen to be on the look-out after thieves pinched hundreds of pounds from his till.
Bob Young, who runs the Pie and Sausage Shop in Terminus Road, saw his business targeted earlier this week in what he believes was an organised and highly thought-out distraction burglary.
A man went into the shop on Tuesday asking for a set of keys which had been left by someone from a neighbouring lighting business which had recently shut.
Nobody at the pie shop knew anything about them so the manager locked the till and went to look in the back room, thinking the visitor may have dealt with an old colleague.
But, according to Mr Young, the man ran round the counter, forced his way into the till and made off with between £400 and £500.
Mr Young said, “The man seemed well organised and in the morning there was someone of dubious character hanging around the shop. He had definitely done his homework on the shop and knew the name of someone who used to work here and the business which had recently closed.
“I would urge other stores in Eastbourne to be on their guard and not to fall for the same trick.
“Times are hard enough at the moment without losing takings.”
