Police are searching for a mystery knifeman after two men were stabbed in Hailsham on Saturday evening (January 2).
A 45-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his neck, which are reported to have been inflicted by a knife. He was treated at Eastbourne District General Hospital and was released on Sunday after receiving ‘numerous’ stitches to his wounds.
A 51-year-old man was cut on the left hand and elbow, but his injuries are not considered serious.
The injuries are reported to have happened during a scuffle, which started outside The Corn Exchange public house at around 11.30pm and ended up on the opposite side of the High Street outside Costa Coffee.
A man who has been identified as the suspect entered the pub at some time after 7pm on Saturday evening and socialised with a number of people, but is reported not to be previously known to them.
He is described as Asian, in his late 40s to mid-50s, 5ft 4in to 5ft 8in, slim with short black well-kept hair.
He was wearing glasses and a dark coloured jacket and greyish jeans.
Detective Sergeant Ross Bartlett said, “This could have been a much more serious incident. A matter of millimetres in the depth or position of the injuries sustained by one of the victims to his neck could have resulted in life-threatening wounds.
“It is rather unusual in that the man appears not to have been known by his fellow drinkers, but was very sociable and engaging and was trying to buy everyone drinks. He did become argumentative as the evening wore on.
“Shortly before the fight outside the pub, he left and a loud bang was heard on a door. We have recovered a ball-bearing from the scene and we are investigating the possibility that this may have been fired from a BB gun or a catapult.
“We want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have engaged with the man at any time during the evening. If you recognise his description or think you know who he is, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 101 quoting serial 1150 of 02/01.”
