AN ARSONIST who was given life in prison after starting a fire in an Eastbourne block of flats is on the run.

Edward Macdonald was serving time at Hollesley Bay in Suffolk when he was given a temporary release licence on June 28.

However, the 46-year-old failed to return and is now being hunted by police.

Officers in Suffolk believe Macdonald may have returned to Eastbourne and are urging locals to be on the look-out – but they should not approach him under any circumstances.

Macdonald, pictured, is around 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build, with a Scottish accent and a scar on his right arm.

He was jailed back in 1996 after using a pot of paint and a pile of unopened mail to start a blaze in a staircase at flats in Seaside.

At the time he was living in Cambridge Road and, although his family are based in East Anglia, they believe he could be headed for his former hometown.

Anyone who has any information about where he is now should call police using the new national number 101.
