Police investigating a rape in Eastbourne have released a CCTV image of a man who may have vital information.

The man, who is not considered a suspect, was walking past Sainsburys in Seaside, Eastbourne at around 4.30am on Thursday September 3.

Detectives now think this was around the same time that an 18-year-old woman was raped nearby, in the area of Gilbert Road just off Seaside.

The victim had been with friends in the Atlantis nightclub before walking home alone some time after 3am.

The suspect is described as white with pale skin and brown hair.

Detective Inspector Neil Ralph said: “We stress that the man in the picture is not regarded as a suspect. He was in the immediate area where we think the attack took place and he may have vital information, perhaps without realising it.

“We are very keen to trace him. If you are that man or if you think you recognise him from the photo, please get in touch us via 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting Operation Umbria.”
