A MAN was jailed for six months on Monday for breaking into an Eastbourne newsagents over the weekend.
Duncan Wallace, of Wharf Road, broke into Paperlane Newsagents in Brassey Parade in the early hours of Saturday December 4.
The 36-year-old stole cigarettes worth thousands of pounds along with hundreds of pounds of Me to You teddy bears.
The break-in triggered the shop’s burglar alarm and within minutes police were at the scene.
A search of the area resulted in officers going to Wallace’s address within 24 hours where they found property from the burglary and arrested him.
Wallace appeared before Eastbourne magistrates on Monday morning charged with the burglary and possession of cannabis.
He pleaded guilty to both offences and was sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment.
A second man is still sought for this offence and police officers are now asking anyone with information to come forward and contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999.
Sussex Police officers said this week it was a case of swift justice for Wallace.
Detective Constable Alex Campbell said, “This was an attack on a local independent retailer just before the Christmas period causing serious disruption to the business.
“We hope this result will act as a deterrent to anybody who thinks about committing crime before or during the festive period.”
