A HAILSHAM man who grabbed his pregnant girlfriend around the throat and gave her a black eye has had his case adjourned.
Scott Walker, of Mill Road, pleaded guilty to assaulting Zoe Beardsall, who is five months pregnant with his child, when he appeared before magistrates on Monday. Walker also admitted kicking a hole in the wall of his girlfriend’s property in the same incident.
The court heard 26-year-old Walker, who has been with Ms Beardsall for four years, was asked to come home by his girlfriend at 6.45pm because she was due to go out. The couple have a 19-month-old child together and another on the way.
Walker returned home at around 7.15pm and the couple started to argue.
The court was told Ms Beardsall ‘got in his face’ by putting her head against his but when he started shouting at her she walked away.
Walker went after his partner, grabbed her around the neck, pushed her up against the wall and held her there for a minute before letting her go.
The mum-to-be walked away again but he grabbed her head and pushed it against the wall before squeezing her neck again. When he let her go she slumped to the floor. He then went back to his girlfriend and picked her up by the throat again.
Ms Beardsall said her head felt fuzzy, her sight went black, she had trouble breathing and felt she was going to black out.
She called the police to report the attack and criminal damage but later retracted her statement, saying it was out of character and the first time he had ever been violent during their relationship.
When interviewed and shown pictures of his girlfriend’s black eye, Walker said he felt physically sick.
Maxine Buck, defending, said, “This is the first occasion of violence and it was fuelled by alcohol. He feels terrible and wants to make it right.”
Magistrates adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports and granted Walker unconditional bail. He will be sentenced at Eastbourne Court on June 13.
