POLICE have appealed for people to come forward after a woman was sexually assaulted in broad daylight.

The victim was walking her dog when she was attacked at around 6.30pm on Saturday, June 11.

Officers have now stepped up patrols after the 19-year-old was attacked in a wooded area as she walked in a lane between Cacklebury Close and Sandbanks Way, Hailsham, pictured above.

She managed to push the attacker off and run away from the scene.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Inspector Rob Morland, said, “The victim is shocked by her ordeal and is receiving support from specially trained officers.

“I would like to thank the local people of Hailsham for their support while we investigate this isolated incident.

“Extra high-visibility patrols from the neighbourhood policing team will be in the area and will be conducting house-to-house enquiries.

“I am appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed any suspicious behaviour to please contact police immediately.”

The suspect is described as being white, in his 40s, with dark, straight, pushed back hair.

He was wearing dark blue jeans and smelt of cigarette smoke.
