AN ELDERLY man who subjected youngsters to a decade of sexual abuse has been sent to prison for 12 years.
Seventy-eight-year-old Peter De La Mothe, of Victoria Road, Eastbourne, was convicted of 25 sexual offences against children after a trial at Lewes Crown Court.
He was handed a prison sentence for the offences at Hove Crown Court when he appeared before Judge Nicholas Philpot on Friday morning (February 24).
The court was told all the offences were committed on two children and the youngsters endured 10 years of sexual abuse at the hands of De La Mothe.
Prosecutors in the case said the 25 offences were all of a sexual nature and included attempted rape, indecent assault and inciting a child to engage sexual activity.
De La Mothe committed the offences between 2000 and 2010.
Detective Constable Martyn Milligan at Eastbourne Police Station said, “This was a very distressing case in which an older man abused two young children over a period of years.
“However, this case does show that we will always take seriously such allegations, even if they are not reported at the time.
“Experienced detectives and a range of support services are available to help and any information will be treated sensitively.”
