DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses a woman was raped on an Eastbourne town centre roundabout last week.

The roundabout in Upper Avenue at the junction with Cavendish Bridge was cordoned off with police tape as commuters made their way to work on Friday morning (September 21).

The scene was also guarded by police as scenes of crimes officers carried out a fingertip search.

It followed an allegation by a woman that she was raped on the roundabout at around 4am that morning.

Officers were called to the scene by passers-by who were concerned for her welfare.

A spokesperson at Sussex Police said, “We are investigating a report of a possible sexual assault on a woman. We are talking to a local woman, who was not physically injured.”

A 33-year old local man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault within hours of the alleged attack. He was questioned by detectives, who are carrying out further enquiries.

The spokesperson said police are appealing for witnesses.

“If anyone was in the Upper Avenue area in the early hours of Friday and saw a couple together, or any suspicious activity, please call us via 101 quoting serial 0137 of 21/9. You can also call independent charity Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111.”
