DURING May the Year of the Volunteer focused on the environment and at Polegate Windmill some long-standing work was completed during the month.

Volunteers put up new cast-iron guttering to the old Malthouse and another volunteer completed painting three coats of paint to more than 150 new shutters for the sweeps.

Repairs have also been carried out on the slate roofs of both the Malthouse and Engine Shed.

The coopering of the ventilation barrel has been refitted with new steel restraining hoops.

The revolving ventilator itself has been reconstructed and painted and the crowning feat of the month was setting the cowl in place and all is now working well.

Eastbourne and District Preservation Trust Ltd is a charity managing Polegate Windmill for future generations.

Each year, some 30 volunteers contribute nearly 3,000 hours to maintaining the mill and opening the building to the public and during Volunteer Environment Month, five more people volunteered to help with the work.

They would like to welcome a few more to become guides and cashiers in the mill and anyone wishing to help should call at the mill on Sunday afternoons or telephone 734496.
