One Eastbourne resident has his job to thank for his 50 years of marriage.

Peter Barker met his future wife Deirdree at Plummers, now known as C&H Fabrics, when she came in as a customer to buy some curtain material.

After the pair got chatting Deirdree kindly gave her future spouse lifts to the scout group he ran and they went on to enjoy a series of dates. Deirdree and Peter then tied the knot at the Salvation Army in Langney Road on December 21, 1963, where Deirdree was part of the choir.

The couple, of Windermere Crescent, have two children – a son aged 45 and a daughter aged 43 – and one grandchild.

Peter, who was born in Isleworth, West London, did two years National Service in Hong Kong and wife Deirdree, who was born in East Hoathly, was a dental nurse at Avenue House in Eastbourne.

He also worked as a salesman for 30 years with Unigate dairies and received an award for delivering milk in bad weather.

Peter is now a carer for his wife, who is disabled, partially sighted and suffers from arthritis.

The pair used to enjoy many a theatre visit and watch productions by local group the Haven Players.

Deirdree now enjoys listening to talking tapes from the Blind Society with Peter, particularly comedy programmes.

The couple, who share many interests, invited around a dozen friends to their home in Windemere Crescent where they have lived for the past 45 years, to enjoy an afternoon tea to mark their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

This month was a double celebration as it also saw Deirdree celebrate her 80th birthday.

Peter, 76, who is a fundraiser for Action for Children, has had a keen interest in journalism and has been a Down Your Way town centre correspondent for the Eastbourne Gazette for many years.

He said the key to his and Deirdree’s long and happy marriage was ‘give and take’, adding, “We enjoy each others company.”
