Eastbourne Borough Council is supporting a new service that helps rough sleepers in the town and throughout all of the country.

StreetLink provides a 24/7 freephone telephone number and website that people can use when they see a rough sleeper in their local area.

It only takes two minutes to alert support services to someone sleeping rough by simply calling 0300 500 0914 or by visiting www.streetlink.org.uk.

On receiving the information StreetLink passes the information to the relevant local authority or homeless service. So far the public have used the service to help more than 7,000 people.

Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing and Community Development, Councillor Margaret Bannister, said, “There are at least 2,400 rough sleepers on streets in the UK.

“While there are relatively few people in this situation in Eastbourne, even one person sleeping rough is one too many. The StreetLink service is simple, fast and absolutely free.

“At this time of the year when temperatures drop we need people to share this message with friends and family. If you see someone sleeping rough, do the right thing and make the call or visit the website, it only takes two minutes.”

StreetLink can also be followed on Twitter @Tell_StreetLink and on Facebook.com/TellStreetLink .

Councillor Bannister added, “Anyone can become homeless, but we can all help protect people from the dangers of rough sleeping by connecting them with local services.”
