A DERELICT nursing home is set to be knocked down and replaced with a new one.
Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning committee has decided the old Belmont Nursing Home, on Eastbourne Road, opposite ASDA, is to be demolished and replaced by a new nursing home.
The applicant, CT Developments, want to build a new nursing home on the site which will provide 70 beds for the town’s elderly people needing care and a day centre for both residents and visitors.
The planning officer in the case told councillors the empty building had problems with anti-social behaviour and it would be a positive thing to demolish the old building. The new building will remain as a two-storey building with a flat roof.
Cllr Jim Murray said, “We do need more care homes. The population is getting older.”
However, Cllr Murray criticised the design.
The council voted unanimously to demolish the old building but only five voted in favour of the new nursing home, with two abstentions.
