Tourism boss sacked!

So Cllr Steve Wallis has been sacked from the tourism role on the council.

Steve was responsible for the Airbourne debacle last year where the council decided to charge residents and visitors alike to stand on their own seafront to see the airshow for the first time. The whole thing was a disaster, and led to a 380,000 bill for the Eastbourne council tax payer.

I'm not at all surprised he has been moved; there needed to be a line drawn under this whole thing, and now things can move forward. Of course it would have been better for him to have fallen on his sword long before now, the council have done themselves no favours by allowing it to drag out all this time.

At the last council meeting in February, Cllr Elkin, the opposition leader predicted that this would happen, and he even predicted the councillor who would take on the role, and he got that spot on as well – how did he know?

The good news though is that the council have confirmed this year that Airbourne will be back to being a 'free' event, so it's time to move on I reckon.

Sign of the times

Isn't it depressing that Powerplay has moved out of the town centre, and next door Ann Summers has moved in. A sign of the times I suppose, but sad for the town centre to lose such a classic local independent music store (who else can remember its' predecessor Max Records?).

All hail to the ale

I went to see Al Murray at the Congress on Saturday night – what a great show it was. I wasn't sure whether the 'Pub Landlord' would have enough quality material to carry off a full show, but he clearly did – it was very funny indeed.

More like this please, Eastbourne theatres!

Independent candidate in Langney

Back to local politics. There is an independent candidate standing in Langney in the County Council elections in June, David Tomlinson.

I think it's a good thing. You won't be surprised to know that I hope the Conservative candidate wins, but the fact that there is an independent will mean the incumbent Lib Dems, who normally win that seat, will have to start working a lot harder than usual, and that's good for democracy.

They normally ignore the area outside of election time, as they think they'll always win there. They may get a shock this year; it won't be so easy for them now.

David has worked quite hard in that area over the last few months and deserves a fair shot at the seat. Unfortunately, should he be elected, he will find the county council quite a lonely place.

As an independent he won't have the backup of a party organisation behind him, and while the rebel element in all this is quite appealing, the reality will be that he would be able to achieve very little indeed. Anyway, we should be thankful to David for making that areas' election such a fascinating battle this year.

Have a great week friends!
