Time for the Speaker to go

I think today will effectively see the end of the Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin, who I predict will make a statement and try to stay and sort the mess out, but will still face a challenge and eventually step down.

He is facing a cross party challenge from MPs determined that his scalp is needed as a first, clear sign that our elected 'honourable' politicians are going to sort the expenses mess out.

And that is the point. The system itself isn't that wrong – it didn't have to be abused!

It was designed for 'honourable' members. If those who have been abusing the system so badly were indeed 'honourable', they would have claimed only what they needed to, to carry out the jobs that we elected them to do. They wouldn't have kept finding ever more obscure and clever ways of trying to rip us off. It is the lack of honour that has been so disappointing.

I spoke to an MP last week who has started introducing himself as a banker, rather than an MP, in the hope that people would think better of him!

MPs from all parties have been implicated in this shocking episode, and this could well lead to a new low in the turnout at the forthcoming elections – even though that would be a tragedy as, under proportional representation, we could see MEPs from fringe parties like the BNP elected.

Eurovision success

So who cares? Who really cares that the UK came 5th, our best place for years in the annual Eurovision song contest? I suspect not many people at all, but it is at least good to see that, given everything we at least have a chance now to do better than we've done in recent years. That must mean that it has become more of an actual song contest than it's been for ages.

The last time we won was 1997, a few weeks after Tony Blair swept to power, and John Prescott claimed it was because of the New Labour government! I predict victory next year as we may well have a new Prime Minister and new Government by then – it must be connected!

Have a great week friends!
