Tanks for the memory

There's going to be some changes on Eastbourne seafront. The tank has gone from the Redoubt – and the views of the public are being sought as to what they'd like to see it replaced by.

I have two ideas:

1. Plant a memorial garden to honour those local people who have given their lives in service to their country (this is where the local military museum has been housed.)

2. Recognise Eastbourne's' relationship with the RAF, and commitment to the Airbourne event by mounting a plane there. That would be a new landmark like the tank was.

Make sure you get your ideas to the council asap. You can do so via their website www.eastbourne.gov.uk/leisure/museums-galleries/redoubt/replace-the-tank/

Also, the Wish tower caf is to be redeveloped. If it has gone past the point of being refurbished, and has to be rebuilt, I hope there's an imaginative design out there for it.

And I also hope that looking for a developer in this market will not lead to the venue being closed for months. It could be that a good refurbishment will suffice for now, but either way it's been a wasted opportunity for a long time, and a quality development will be to Eastbourne's benefit.

Period of Purdah

This column for the next few weeks will be non-political. At least non party political.

During the run-up to any election there is a period of 'purdah' during which all media outlets have to be balanced in all information they put out, and we are in that period now.

Together through Life

I picked up Bob Dylan's new album last week – and very good it is too.

I gather it's No1 in the album charts, the first time Dylan has held that position for nearly 40 years! That's difficult to believe.

And frankly, whilst it's a good album, there have been plenty in between that have been more deserving of the top spot. 1990's 'O Mercy' is a particular favourite as is his album of just two years ago, 'Modern Times', and not forgetting all those classics in the 70's.

Not that you can judge Dylan on chart popularity.

This one, called 'Together Through Life' is the sort of album you'll want to play again and again, especially on lazy sunny afternoons while you're lying in the garden.

It's got a lovely feel to it. In classic Dylan prose, some of it sounds quite lazily put together, while there are a few superb tracks. My favourites are 'Life is Hard', 'If You Ever Go to Houston', and the outstanding track is the beautiful 'I Feel a Change Coming On'.

Have a great week friends, and next week, I'll be reviewing Bruce Springsteen's recent album 'Working on a Dream'.
