Spinning out of control

The arrogance of our Government is quite astonishing, following another weekend of headlines about what their most senior advisors have been up to.

Not content with ruining the economy by running out of our money, it's now been revealed that the Government employs people who are content to use public money and public resources to come up with a plan to try and destroy the credibility of those that seek to make the country a better place, simply because they are in a different party to themselves.

They are quite happy to misinform, make stuff up and present innuendo as fact. They think nothing of implicating members of their opponent's families, if it might produce for them a good headline.

What a despicable state of affairs. Their credibility is shot, and they make matters worse by their inability to take responsibility for anything.

The very least one would expect from those responsible, in this case the Prime Minister, would be an apology and an assurance that this cannot happen again.

Personally I find it sickening that politics acts at this level. But we shouldn't be surprised. Certain politicians have always believed they have a born right to hold high office no matter what the cost, or to whom.

I'm sad for those decent people in the Labour party who now have to come out and try and defend the indefensible.

I'm not talking about the cabinet ministers rolled out throughout Easter to comment on this. I'm talking about the real, good people who are the grassroots of that party. And yes, there are many. I sat through a speech just recently from a Labour backbench MP who is genuinely one of the good guys and will be completely embarrassed by all of this nonsense.

Unfortunately for them, the inability to act in a decent way will very soon mean they find themselves out of office, and if this is the level they have sank to, they deserve nothing less.

Speaking of out of touch politicians, last week Tony Blair presented himself as being above the Pope!

Now, I'm not a Catholic, but I have a tremendous respect for those who hold that faith, particularly as they have, for the most part, held true to their beliefs.

But last week their recent convert, Mr Blair, who did so much that is inconsistent with that faith while he was Prime Minister (when he could have done such good), said in effect that the Pope is out of touch, and that most Catholics don't agree with him! What astonishing arrogance!

Enough about Labour Prime Ministers, both past and present.

The New Towner

Last week I spent a couple of hours having a good look round the new Towner. And with the exception of the woefully inadequate coffee shop, I think it has enormous potential.

Of course art is a matter of personal taste, and there are many who feel that local councils shouldn't run such places. However, others believe that Alderman Towner gave Eastbourne a tremendous advantage in the 1920s when he gave the original gallery and exhibits to the people of the town, and it is now incumbent upon the council to maximise that advantage for all our benefit.

The building itself is superb, and has enormous potential for the community of Eastbourne. Even though I agree that it is yet to reach its full potential from an art perspective, it is a great asset to the town, and the community will benefit greatly from the facilities we now have. In addition to the art, which is of mixed quality, and will always be subject to personal opinion, the building is another asset to the town that our competitors don't have, and will mean we can facilitate bigger and better exhibitions and conferences than they can. That has to be good news for our town.

Have a great week friends!
