Council Tax challenge

In just few days we'll see just how much the local council tax will go up from Eastbourne Borough Council.

I hope they stick to the rate of inflation or below, as was the case for the last three years of the Conservative run council in Eastbourne.

There are many councils around the country who are trying to freeze council tax this year, as a sign of standing up for hardworking families who are already paying too much – I don't expect that from the LibDem-run council here in Eastbourne (even though they believed they could do it in 2007 when things were easier for them – they weren't actually running the council!)

The Herald reports that the County Council will put their portion of the tax up by 3.5%, which is the average around the country.

In Eastbourne last year, the Council managed to find 360,000 in a contingency fund so they didn't have to directly charge the taxpayer for the cock-up over charging for Airbourne (even though it's all tax payers money in the first place!)

If there is that sort of money sitting in the contingency budgets, now would be a good time to use some of it so the council tax increase is kept right down.

"British Jobs for British Workers".

It was always obvious that this phrase would come back and haunt the Prime Minister – he used it during his speech at the 2007 Labour Party Conference, when he was on a high in the polls, and was simply playing to the gallery.

Now of course, there are disputes around the country, and pictures of workers holding up placards with that very phrase on.

Tough one Mr Brown – how are you going to sort this one out?

Have a good week friends.
