Babyfather - Searching for the positive
It's difficult to know where to start on the story that has dominated the national papers all weekend - that of he 'babyfather'.
So much of this story is a sickening reflection of Britain in 2009 that I'm going to just try to concentrate on the positive. Enough has been written by others already casting a bad light on our town.
So where are the good points…
Firstly it's a miracle that this baby wasn't aborted, and the Mother (Chantelle) and those around her deserve great credit for that.
Also, reports say that she is doing a course in a local church - so let's hope and pray that has a positive effect and helps turn her life around.
Apart from that I think the adults around should her get beside Chantelle and Alfie pretty damn quick, stop all the talk of using the case to 'make a packet', and stand by these kids to help them through this situation.
I just hope this case serves as a reality check to our complacent Government that teenage pregnancy rates in the UK, among the highest anywhere, are so out of control that something must be done now – and the answer isn't simply more sex education and more free condoms.
If some genuine changes come about to protect our kids, allowing them to actually have a few teenage years when they're not worried about sex and all it involves, then some good can perhaps come out of this. It will be a true scandal if we just carry on as we are.
Airbourne
The other big story locally is of course the Airbourne shambles and the resignations from leading councillors - or rather the lack of them.
A few years ago this town had annual elections where local people could have a say at the ballot box over the issues of the day.
That has now changed and there are elections for the Borough Council every fur years. Cllrs Tutt and Wallis must be very thankful they haven't got to face the Borough electorate this year as they would no doubt be out on their ears.
Remember they were the ones responsible for the ridiculous decision to charge for Airbourne last year against all logic. They said at the time this would turn the Airbourne 'loss' of 72K into profit (or at least break even).
Instead of this it ended up making a loss of 380,000! Great move Cllrs!
And yet no-one thinks they should take the rap! Cllrs Tutt and Wallis must be glad there is another big Eastbourne story dominating the news to keep the focus away from them!
Have a good week friends..
PS – if you're looking for something to do with the kids this week – I recommend BOLT at the cinema – great family fun.
