The heartbreakingly tragic death of the devoted parents of little Sam Puttick at Beachy Head has dominated the headlines this week, both locally and nationally.

They drove to the cliff on Sunday and jumped to their deaths after their beloved son Sam lost his battle with meningitis two days before.

The story has struck a chord across the country, with people queueing up to pay tribute to five-year-old Sam and his parents, who spent their waking hours making Sam's short life a happy one - despite a terrible accident which left him paralysed.

But it is not just the parents to whom tribute must be paid - the exhausting, traumatic and essential work carried out by the coastguards and police, as well as the Beachy Head chaplaincy volunteers, surely deserves immense praise.

There are few people who have the mental and physical wherewithal to cope with such a demanding situation.

Despite the uniquely tragic details of the Putticks' deaths, the sad reality is that there will be more deaths at Beachy Head this year and more demanding and distressing rescues for the coastguards and police to deal with.
