So the Towner is finally opening its doors to the public this Saturday after years of planning and months of building.
It is difficult, at the moment, to accurately gauge the welcome it will receive. Certainly the 8.6 million building is a refreshing boost to the more sedate charms that Eastbourne is traditionally known for and is sure to put the town firmly on the cultural map.
A building of this size and expense is sure to generate plenty of strong views - not everyone is a fan of its appearance or its price tag - but hopefully residents will now be able to enjoy the art on display, which includes new work by an internationally renowned artist, the Towner Collection, pieces by local youngsters and work generated by the Towner's outreach programme.
The Towner is hoping to attract, as well as art lovers, people who may in the past have had little interest in a gallery and involve them in generating art and appreciating it.
Eastbourne has previously been overshadowed by its neighbour Bexhill, with the De La Warr Pavilion, but now the town can boast its own state-of-the art gallery.
Love it or loathe it, the Towner will need the support of the people of Eastbourne to be a success - and surely that's in everyone's interests.
