The Conservatives have suffered another blow to their pre county council election campaign. Back in the spring, they unveiled David Tomlinson as their new candidate for Langney.

Weeks later, Mr Tomlinson decided to quit the party but continue to stand for the Langney ward as an Independent - against the Tory candidate.

Then top local Tory Bob Lacey shelved his plans to stand again as a county councillor after a complaint was made to the ESCC Standards Committee about a letter sent out to residents by Cllr Lacey on county council headed notepaper.

The third blow for the party locally came this week when it was revealed by the Eastbourne Herald that a Tory candidate had been technically married to two women at the same time.

Any advantage that the Conservatives may have gained from the national expenses fiasco - Tory MPs have also been under fire for expenses claims, but it has been the ruling party that has taken most of the flak from the public - seems to be ebbing away.

The rest of the Conservative hopefuls must be praying they are as 'squeaky clean' as their Eastbourne MP professes to be.
