The complaints that have flooded into the Herald since we ran a story last week about the Heatherleigh Hotel make shocking reading.

Disgruntled guests phoned in to tell us about bedbugs, dirty sheets and poor food and staff complained they had not been paid properly.

Surely now is the time for Eastbourne Borough Council to get involved and carry out a full investigation? If officers find nothing wrong (and the manager of the hotel is adamant there are no problems and that the numerous complaints have been made by people with a grudge), so much the better, but if the allegations are found to be correct, action must be taken - not only to sort out any issues for guests and staff, but also to safeguard Eastbourne's reputation.

The town is well-known across the country for its hotels, from the smallest B&B to the largest five star establishment, and all the hard work put in by local hoteliers may be tarnished if Eastbourne becomes more famous for complaints about a 'Fawlty Towers' style venue than the excellent hotels our resort boasts.
