IT is shocking, but not at all surprising, that the CAB and People Matter, a charity which helps jobseekers get back to work, are being bombarded with requests for help at the moment.

Figures reveal that there are eight times as many people seeking jobs as there are vacancies - a figure which will no doubt climb higher.

The staff of one town centre store have taken matters into their own hands - when they heard the shop was closing they stuck a poster in the window advertising themselves for work.

But more official help is desperately needed. The CAB has seen a mammoth 82 per cent rise in redundancy queries in the last quarter, and a rise in associated queries about benefits, mortgages, bailiffs and even relationship issues.

It underlines the critical importance of the Bureau - which, it should be remembered, is a charity - in helping the people of Eastbourne.

On a more positive note, the new plan for the future of maternity services has been released by the DGH. It recommends not only keeping consultant-led units, but also introducing midwife-led units as well.
