Slowly, but surely, Eastbourne seems to be developing a name for itself in artistic circles.
Although there has always been plenty of local theatre, music and art groups thriving in the town, there has previously been a lack of a unified 'scene'. The town has suffered in comparison to nearby Brighton, and even Hastings, Bexhill and Lewes seemed to be able to garner more national exposure than Eastbourne.
Of course, Eastbourne has always had to cope with the 'God's waiting room' jibes that have somewhat hindered the town's image. And the lack of music venues hasn't helped either, leaving bigger bands no option but to choose Brighton when looking to play on the south coast.
However, with the second year of Eastbourne Festival galvanising the town, along with the launch of the multi-million pound Towner gallery - a launch with did make some of the national papers, albeit qualified by expressions of surprise that Eastbourne would have such a venue - perhaps the tide is turning.
Certainly Eastbourne has plenty to brag about. With four theatre venues, plenty of local am-dram groups, choirs, orchestras and artists, it certainly has the potential to stay in the headlines - for all the right reasons.
The Herald has received some negative letters about the Towner, and its artwork, but at least the town has strong opinions about its arts scene - as well as plenty of talent to take it forward.
