The council must be squirming after suffering a financial double whammy this week.

Firstly, Eastbourne Borough Council has been hit with a 440,000 fine (with a 100,000 fine to come next year) for errors in calculating housing benefit and council tax payments.

The larger sum stems from when the Tories were in charge, the smaller has been racked up by the LibDem administration. Councillors are reassuring residents that the figure was expected and has been budgeted for.

But coming hot on the heels of the council's damning report by the Audit Commission, which said the council's system for producing accounts was inadequate and contained a 'significant' number of errors, it seems as if the council has had some serious problems in that department over the past few years.

Council leader David Tutt wants to wipe the slate clean and strive for transparency in EBC's financial dealings. Let's hope these efforts pay dividends.

On a more positive financial note, thousands of pounds will have been raised for charity by the Herald and Rotary AM Achievers Awards this week.

There may be a credit crunch, but there are still people willing to put their hands in their pockets to contribute to this fundraising evening and - more importantly - plenty of people who deserve being honoured.
