OUT IN THE FIELD: Time to sort out Exceat Bridge congestion

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer or the brightest fairy in the forest sometimes but I like to think I am fairly astute when it comes to scams and dodgy websites. Sadly not it would seem as when I tried to buy some 'bargain price' shoes online on Sunday night, I failed to notice that what I thought was a genuine site was in fact a fake. Too late, I had entered my card details thinking I had scored a bargain when all I had really done was give the green light to some suspicious individual in the Far East to attempt to get their grubby little paws on my hard-earned cash. Fortunately, Barclays Bank was more on the ball and within seconds of my '˜purchase,' had declined the payment, alerted me by text message and were on the phone to me asking if I had in fact wanted to part with large sums of cash to a Chinese individual. Barclays operators were absolutely brilliant as were the branch staff in Terminus Road, especially Siwan on the counter who sympathised with my plight and did all the necessary arrangements. A lesson learned and I shall be more careful in future. And as the old saying goes: If something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

The debate about possibly renaming the seaward end of Terminus Road rumbles on and Roy Peacock wrote to me this week saying he was pleased I had a change of heart from favouring The Boulevard to Victoria Place instead. Roy, who admits he is old enough to remember the name being changed to Terminus Road in 1947, has set up a campaign on social networking site Streetlife asking for backers for Victoria Place. I rarely go to Seaford but sympathise with those who travel along the A259 on a daily basis and have to navigate their way over the terribly narrow Exceat Bridge which is only wide enough for one lane of traffic. Now, there is an online petition calling on East Sussex County Council to put in traffic lights to try to ease the congestion and delays for motorists. I remember many moons ago when the bridge was either being tarted up or the road being resurfaced, temporary traffic lights were put up and it all worked exceedingly well. If enough people shout about it and sign the petition, hopefully the powers that be at County Hall will sit up and take notice.

Eastbourne photographers Roy and Alison Morris recently returned from Cuba and are exhibiting and selling their colourful canvasses of Cuban scenes. A percentage of those sold and bar takings will be going to the Chestnut Tree appeal, ahead of my charity trek to Cambodia next year and I have even roped the Little Treasures in to sell tickets for a raffle to take place on the night. More importantly, I am told the mojitos are a must.
