OUT IN THE FIELD: All power to the people of Meads

People power and the county council actually listening to what folk want has resulted in plans to take away parking spaces outside shops in Meads village being shelved '“ much to the delight of traders who feared it would hit business hard if customers had nowhere to park. There is also a victory for residents too who were rightly sick and tired of lorries trundling through narrow streets to get to the centre of the village.

I had the pleasure this week of meeting members of the Sovereign Divers Eastbourne branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club at their regular Tuesday night meeting at the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club. Aside from being on the lookout for new members, the club is also going to help provide some of their photos taken on dives on shipwrecks off the coast of Eastbourne, particularly those which sank during the First World War 100 years ago, for the Looking Back pages in the Herald. Seemingly there are scores of wrecks on our watery doorstep and I hope that by finding photos of the original vessels and marrying them up with the divers’ photos, it should make for some interesting reading.

I bet the poor folk staying in the Premier Inn got a shock when part of the building took off with the wind on Monday afternoon. That’s the problem with new buildings put up quickly these day – they just aren’t durable. As my old Dad would say, they don’t build ‘em like they used to. And thank the good Lord nobody was in the car below which ended up under a pile of bricks.

‘Taxi-gate’ at the new railway station rank continues unabated with more complaints that motorists are using the bus stop to drop passengers off and if they aren’t doing that, they are driving, much to the annoyance of the Hackney drivers, in to the rank to drop off. You can hardly blame them at the moment though as there isn’t a sign to be seen advising people it is for taxis only.
