Is it time to rename the Arndale?

I’m never one to deliberately set the cat among the pigeons, but now that plans for the extension of Arndale Centre are gathering speed and it looks like we are going to have a sparkling new offering, wouldn’t it be a good idea to rid the shopping complex of such a ghastly name and call it something else altogether? I have never liked the name Arndale Centre. Arndale bears no relevance to Eastbourne, nor what was there before they built the centre. It has no historic link with the town and was purely just the names of property magnates, baker Arnold Hagenbach and estate agent and former civil servant Sam Chippindale, who founded the retail development company which built other equally unattractive shopping centres across the country in the 1970s. I haven’t a clue what it could be called but I am sure there are lots of people out there with lots of good ideas. The times are a-changing as far as the shopping centre are concerned so surely a new look, new image mall deserves a new name. Suggestions on a postcard please.

Earlier this month I found myself down at Langney Sports (where it’s always nice to see behind the bar the lovely Neil and equally fabulous Roger, who will be missed when he retires next month) for a leaving party in honour of Jenny Britcher, who has looked after countless cancer and leukaemia patients at the DGH’s Pevensey Unit over the years and is leaving to take up a new post in another hospital department. Pevensey’s loss is Rheumatology’s gain.

It’s school holidays AGAIN and I’m off with the Little Treasures. Deep joy. See you in two weeks.
