AmicusHorizon volunteers have helped transform the community hall at Christ Church in Eastbourne.
The dedicated group spent five weeks decorating the venue, off Hanover Road, as part of a DIY course run by the housing association.
And they’ve turned a tired looking building into a fantastic area the community can feel proud of.
The participants have also picked up easy tips and tricks for home improvements, learning from a professional decorator and builder.
Volunteer Anisa Bharmal said, “I came here looking to give something back to the community.
“I’ve met new people and learnt so many new skills.
“ I feel very happy and proud of what we’ve achieved.
“The course has built my confidence up.
“And I know if my friends and family need help with any decorating then I can still keep giving!”
The work included repairing walls and ceilings, woodwork and painting.
All of the volunteers were from the Sussex area and either unemployed or on a low wage.
They attended a celebration at the community hall on Friday (March 27) and were presented with certificates and DIY kits in recognition of their hard work.
The Seaside community hall is used by a number of groups, including a dance school and church activities.
Christ church warden Margaret Barr said, “I’m delighted with the hall because it was in desperate need of decoration.
“The standard of work is phenomenal.
“We’re really grateful.”
Yvonne Wood, hall administrator, added, “Everyone who uses the hall will benefit from its redecoration .
“It’s now a nice place to be.
“Before there was loose plaster and the paint had chipped, now it’s bright and fresh.
“I’m very happy with the results and would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard.”
