DETAILS of the new look Arndale Centre will be unveiled at a public exhibition today (Friday April 13).

Members of the public will be able to view details of the planning application to extend the centre at an exhibition in the former Sony store from 10am to 4pm.

The plans for the £70 million scheme include the demolition of buildings west of the centre along Terminus Road, the construction of up to 22 new ground and first floor units, a two-storey extension to the existing car park deck and new pedestrian access including new shop fronts on to Terminus Road.

The exhibition is being organised by owners of the Arndale Centre, Performance Retail Limited Partnership, a joint venture between Legal & General and Strathclyde Pension Fund.

Construction work on the scheme is expected to start within the next two years.

A detailed planning application has already been submitted to Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning department and a decision is expected to be made in the summer.

The development team behind the regeneration has looked carefully at the results of nearly 1,000 questionnaires that were completed and tried to incorporate those considerations into its updated plans.

Key requests included covering the extension, more car parking and an improved and extended pedestrian area.

The plan will provide a transparent roof over the extension, an additional 317 car parking spaces and improvements to the pedestrian access to the Arndale Centre from Terminus Road.

Simon Russian, head of retail development at Legal & General Property, said, “We are delighted to be submitting our planning application for the extension of the Eastbourne Arndale Centre today.

“This takes the transformation of the town centre one step closer. We look forward to welcoming members of the public to the exhibition in April where they will be able to see the plans for themselves.”
