A TIRELESS charity shop volunteer has celebrated her 90th birthday.
Amelia Penfound, who still works at the Demelza House shop in Terminus Road, says she likes meeting the customers, socialising with staff and helping raise money for the children.
The 90-year-old started her role at the shop around three years ago and said, “I just walked in and I saw a lady in the shop and asked if I could volunteer.
“I thought it would be nice to have the company and I love children.
“Demelza is a brilliant cause. I went to see the hospice home and it was very nice and very interesting. They look after the children very well.”
Karen Wood, the shop manager, said, “Amelia is wonderful and to think she is 90 – she is just amazing.
“She has been here dor three years and she loves it.”
We are very busy now on Wednesdays with the market outside and Amelia has been brilliant. Our till is a computer and she has picked that up very well.
“We call her the Queen of Demelza.”
Amelia is the oldest of the 30 volunteers and the youngest is 21. They enjoy social events together and Ameila is always the first to sign up.
She will celebrate her 90th birthday with her three daughters, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and other family members on Saturday (August 18).
The party guests will go back to her home afterwards where she will serve champagne and cake.
Fellow volunteers also made a fuss of Amelia at her Wednesday shift. She was presented with a birthday cake, flowers and chocolates.
