Trading Standards Advice and Information: Networking event is postponed until April 20

East Sussex County Council Trading Standards are organising a networking event at the Azur, St Leonards-on-sea. Due to be held on Thursday, March 31, this has now been postponed until April 20 - we apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.

We are hoping to engage with organisations and individuals working, volunteering or living in East Sussex that have regular contact with vulnerable consumers that either are or could potentially become victims of mass marketed scams

Misleading mailing make false promises of huge bogus lottery wins or other high value prizes, but they always insist on payment to THE SENDER before any winnings can be claimed.

Targets of these scams can find themselves on the receiving end of wave after wave of letters, with some being sent up to 600 misleading letters a month from across the world. Those that fall victim to the mailings can send off hundreds of pounds a month over many years and despite the riches promised in each letter, never win a penny.

If you would like to come along and find out how we can work together to beat the scammers, contact Trading Standards now on 01323 464481 or by email to hollie.farley@eastsussex.gov.uk to book a space.

The day will begin at 9.30 with teas and coffees throughout the morning and a short presentation from Tom Cook our lead officer on Scams Awareness.

There will then be opportunity to discuss the nature of mass marketed scams, share ideas and information on the latest scams and discuss problems that we have come across in recognising and helping scam victims.

We will also discuss how we can work together to protect vulnerable consumers and how we would like to see work in this area to move forward in order to combat the scammers.

The day will end with a buffet lunch 2.00pm.
