PLANS to bring a quality street market to Terminus Road, to bring thousands of shoppers to the town centre, are moving ahead.

Work has taken place over the last few months between representatives of the Eastbourne Independent Traders Group and Eastbourne Borough Council.

Stephen Lloyd MP said, “The objective of bringing a really good market to the town centre has been one of the goals of the MP’s Commission from the very beginning.

“I’m delighted the council has been so supportive of the idea, and working in partnership with the Traders Association we are moving closer to this dream being realised.

“It will lead to increased footfall into our town centre, and is yet another example of Eastbourne responding positively to the economic challenges that the whole country is facing.”

Tim Tradewell, owner of the Terminus Road shop The Secret Garden and chairman of the Eastbourne Independent Traders Association, added, “We are convinced that a regular market at the top end of Terminus Road will bring thousands of extra shoppers into Eastbourne.

“I appreciate the support the MP has given to the project, and also welcome the way our council has approached the challenge so positively.”

The vice chair of the Eastbourne Traders, Tony Roberts, who is the owner of the Bella Donna Boutique in Terminus Road, said, “When we first brought this up with the MP’s Commission it was noted by the Leader of the Council David Tutt that while there were numerous by-laws that would need to be dealt with, the council would do all they could to sort them out.

“They’ve been true to their word, and I’m the first to congratulate them for their can-do attitude.

“We’ve still got a few hoops to jump through but it’s clear now that our original vision is on course.

“Great news for local shops, and great news for Eastbourne.”
