Soap star opens new saver store

Coronation Street star Paula Lane at Poundland in Eastbourne

Coronation Street star Paula Lane at Poundland in Eastbourne

Coronation Street star Paula Lane was in Sovereign Harbour to open a new shop which is creating 32 jobs.

The Weatherfield actress was guest of honour at Poundland in the retail park in Pevensey Bay Road.

And she cut the ribbon in front of hordes of fans and bargain hunters eager to get a first look at the new business.

Ms Lane, who plays Coronation Street minx Kylie Turner, posed for pictures and signed dozens of autographs as a host of lucky shoppers won on-the-spot prizes and vouchers.

The shop has been opened to compliment the existing Poundland in Terminus Road and management said it would add 32 new jobs to the area.

These new positions may well be temporary, with the budget business confirming the Sovereign Harbour site was being trialled over the festive season.

Poundland has a policy of opening seasonal stores to cash in on the Halloween to Christmas rush, although a spokesman said there was room for manoeuvre if the store proved particularly successful.

A spokesman said, “This is a new store, not a resite and the other Eastbourne store will not be closing. At the moment, this store is aimed to be seasonal, although that plan may change.

“The 32 jobs are new jobs, rather than those from the other Eastbourne store.”

As well as the visiting Coronation Street star, the shop also held a fun day, with children treated to free balloons and sweets.

An in-store DJ provided entertainment and store manager Wendy Williams was delighted with how the launch went. She said,“I’m thrilled that the people of Eastbourne turned out in their hundreds to support their new Poundland store.

“Shoppers enjoyed the entertainment and had a great time meeting Paula Lane while browsing for bargains.

“It was a great first day in what I am sure will be a very successful future for the store.”
