Club runner and amateur triathlete Wes Mechen realised that there wasn’t a sports shop locally which catered to the needs of athletes who required performance footwear.

Wes decided to do something about it and in January 2014 he opened Tempo, a specialist running shop, with his business partner Faye McClelland.

Based in Susans Road, Eastbourne, Tempo aims to improve the experience of runners of all abilities and provides customers with the opportunity to have their technique analysed and gait assessed.

Shoes are carefully selected based on testing and personal experience and customers can test them out on either the in-store treadmill or outside.

Faye has previously represented Great Britain in the para-triathlon and is a four time world champion, as well as a qualified physiotherapist.

With her wealth of experience she provides advice and information on injuries to customers.

Wes said, “It has been such an enjoyable experience starting a business, very time consuming, but thoroughly worthwhile.

“Being a lecturer in business and sport, it has certainly been a case of practising what I preach!”

To get Tempo up and running, Wes and Faye needed some financial support and got in touch with the Let’s Do Business Group to find out about the Start Up Loans scheme.

Start Up Loans is a government initiative for anyone who is looking to set up their own business and can’t access funding from traditional high street lenders.

Start Up Loans are accessible to anyone over the age of 18 who has the ambition and enthusiasm to launch their own business. The scheme also provides expert business mentoring support.

Wes added, “I had heard about the support Let’s Do Business group provide and decided to contact them initially to see what help was available.

“After presenting the business plan I had a series of meetings before attending a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style interview. The loan was agreed and we were on our way.”

Stephen Lloyd MP added, “It is always heartening to see new businesses like Tempo move from potential good idea to fully fledged commercial enterprise.

“Wes and Faye possess a wealth of knowledge in their specialist area that would be hard to find anywhere else.

“I was delighted to meet them and see the fantastic way they are catering for people in Eastbourne who are serious about their running.”
