Parking wardens are getting ready to spread some festive cheer across Eastbourne in the countdown to Christmas.
It means there will be free on street parking for late night shopping on every Thursday from 4pm running up to Christmas as well as on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
The move by East Sussex County Council and its parking operator NSL comes after a bid by the Eastbourne Town Team – a group of young business people in the town whose aim is to leave behind the God’s Waiting Room label and re-energise the town centre – to local authorities and is aimed at supporting retailers and encourage more shoppers into the town centre.
On-street parking provided by ESCC and NSL will be free after 4pm on Thursday December 13 and 20 until the next morning. Eastbourne Borough Council will be waiving its parking charges from 4pm for the central parking bays at Hyde Gardens and the Devonshire Park Car Park in College Road.
The Arndale Centre and Enterprise Centre private car parks are also providing free car parking after 6pm on the Thursdays before Christmas.
Councillor Carl Maynard, the lead memBer for transport and environment said, “In the spirit of the season, we have agreed that we will not charge for parking on the Thursday nights running up to Christmas. Hopefully it will make Christmas shopping a little bit easier for people.”
Lucy Newport, Town Team chair, said, “Speaking honestly, the Christmas HoHo, our Centre Stage, all the events run by community champions across the town, the free parking victory, which Eastbourne Town Team won but will benefit the county, and the buzz I feel this Christmas unlike others before, is unimaginably amazing.
“We are so grateful to all those who have helped and we’re looking forward to welcoming shoppers to a vibrant Eastbourne High Street this December – helping to bring prosperity and life to our wonderful town.”
