EASTBOURNE gym Fitness First is closing down. The gym in the Sovereign Harbour Retail Park has written to members saying it will close its doors at noon on June 30.
The company says the closure is part of an ongoing restructuring programme and the Eastbourne branch is one of a number of gyms being shut across the country.
The Eastbourne branch of the gym has more than 1,600 members.
Staff were called into a meeting this month and told the news and offered redundancy packages.
Studio manager and instructor Debra Stevens, who also runs KayJay Zumba in Eastbourne, said it was very sad news.
“It came as a real shock but everybody wants to make the last month as good as possible for the members,” said Debra, who teaches Zumba, spin, body combat and aerobics at Fitness First.
“It really is a fantastic place to work and the members are great. It really is like a meeting place for people. It’s going to be such a loss, especially for the members.”
Those with membership at Fitness First are being given the alternative of transferring to the Brighton Fitness First club or cancelling their membership.
A spokesperson at Fitness First said, “We have made some changes to the UK portfolio which includes closing a small number of clubs. We are extremely grateful to the teams in these clubs, and we will look to redeploy people wherever we can, and encourage members to move to clubs nearby where we have them.”
