Work begins on new Hampden Park superstore
Morrisons new store in Hampden Park. Demolition work on the site was launched by Stephen Lloyd MP E03047N
WORK has started to build a new supermarket for Hampden Park.
Demolition work on the former Anglo Dutch Meats site has started to make way for the new Morrisons store, due to open later this year.
The supermarket chain was granted planning permission last year and the new store will provide hundreds of employment opportunities for local residents.
As part of a local labour initiative negotiated by Eastbourne Borough Council, Morrisons has committed to use local businesses in the construction phase as well as employing local people in the store.
Eastbourne Car Auctions has also moved to Brampton Road to help enable the development to take place.
Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd went down to the site for the start of the construction.
He said, “I was absolutely delighted to be there at the start of the construction of the new Morrisons store in Hampden Park.
“I have been involved with this project every step of the way, and I look forward to opening the store later this year when it opens for business.
“It offers employment in the area, broadens the retail choice and, most importantly of all, shows that major companies continue to invest in Eastbourne. They know our town has a great future, and I agree.”
“The project has been in the pipeline for some time, with discussions held with developers working on behalf of Morrisons to acquire and redevelop the remaining corner of Lottbridge Drove, Willingdon Drove and Arkwright Road.
Mark Chappell, Morrisons development executive, added, “We thank Stephen Lloyd for his invaluable support throughout the process and were delighted that he was able to join us today to help kick-start work at the site.
“We are keen to help address local unemployment in the area and will be employing local contractors during the construction wherever possible.
“We can’t wait to bring the Morrisons offer to Eastbourne and look forward to inviting Stephen down again as the work progresses.”

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 09:57 AMThank god ! Another reason to avoid the town centre ! As i have done for the last 2 years , since i parked on the 'wrong' side of the road which led to a £45 fine ! Thats why i never go into town any more ! why should i when i can go to the Crumbles, Langney, Hampden Park, Big Tesco's etc....where i get to park FREE and ALWAYS find somewhere to park !

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 09:57 AMTruth B. Told you are spot on, this is a false economy, it will not create any jobs as the other three Supermarkets will not recruit for years, not until their wage control falls in line with sales.

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 06:53 PMHigh tech industry coming to Eastbourne Truth B Told? It'll never happen. East Sussex is too far off the beaten track. Stone age road and rail links and a semi educated work force. That sort of industry congregates around the M4-M25 corridor where the road and rail links exist and the brainy Asians live. Far better for Eastbourne to concentrate on tourism, which means getting rid of the on-street parking scam and the putting of parking meters in every lay-by and sight seeing spot around the town!

Monday, January 23, 2012 at 01:04 PMI also would like to wish Morrisons and all its eventuall new staff ,lots of luck and success , when it opens ,ps Morrisons are providing a lot of needy jobs in areas up and down the country, regardless of tpye of work, surely its better to open a new store and provide some employement them shops closing down, i for one am umemployed and would work for miminum wage to get back into work, and i beleive so would a lot of the currently jobless, Good on Morrisons . So what if all 3 other superstore are also in area, so Morrisons want a chance also , good on them, at least they are a rather more realisite store size and dont try to sell every thing under the sun. PS any jobs going near Morecambe, pls, morrisons have you any plans to build in Lancaster.

Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 03:47 PMAsda Superstore, Tesco Superstore, Sainsbury's Superstore, and now a Morrisons Superstore. Four "super"stores within a circle with a radius of about 1.5 miles. And one wonders why Eastbourne city centre is looking more and more derelict... Can't imagine the existing superstores are very happy about this either. So who gains? Low-salary job creation in Hampden Park, but at what cost to existing jobs in downtown stores and employment levels at the existing supers? Why not put effort into attracting (high)tech industry? Get younger people into town, with higher spending power, based on jobs with a lot more ambition than refilling shelves and scanning barcodes?
