Police are warning people to be on their guard after a spate of thefts in Eastbourne.
Handbags, wallets and mobile phones have been snatched by opportunistic thieves, who could be operating as a gang.
Sergeant Howard Nevill, of the neighbourhood policing team, said, “Although we have had a few thefts over recent days this is not usual for the area and it may be that we have a gang or individual targeting Eastbourne.
“No one has been physically hurt but we are keen to prevent further crimes of this nature. A call to police on 999 if an offence is thought to be in progress or to 101 with details of anything suspicious that has occurred would be ideal.
“Local officers are fully aware and patrols are working in the area to identify those responsible. We aim to act robustly and public support is appreciated.”
Officers’ advice includes: keep wallets and purses concealed, such as at the bottom of bags or in inside pockets; when eating in restaurants or cafes, place bags under the table between your feet or thread the strap through the chair leg; keep your mobile phone with you at all times and do not leave it unattended; take care of your phone when visiting the beach or large public events.
