Belly dancing, free health checks, manicures and discovering the wonderful world if iPads were the order of the day at a special 50s plus celebration day organised by Age Concern Eastbourne.
To mark UK Older People’s Day, the Eastbourne charity staged the event at the Venton Centre in Junction Road when a veritable feast of different activities were laid on for the over-50s.
“This was an opportunity to raise awareness within the local community that there is something for everyone over 50 at the Venton Centre and to dismiss pre-conceived ideas that AGE Concern Eastbourne only provides activities and services for the very frail,” explained Christine Moakes, Age Concern Eastbourne’s Well-Being co-ordinator.
The day-long event proved enormously popular with visitors pleasantly surprised to find taster sessions for body conditioning, dancercise, line dancing and zumba gold.
Those attending the event had a chance to be pampered with free manicures and health checks, supplied with information from the Eastbourne Rainbow Group and local organisations, and for those wanting to find out more about new technology, volunteers were on hand to give advice and guidance on the use of iPads.
Christine Moakes said that the day produced some very positive feedback about the welcoming atmosphere and comfortable appearance of the Venton Centre.
She added, “One first-time visitor said that it was the first Age Concern event she had visited that really was’ full of life’ and another found the information provided about iPads so useful that she was able to ask the right questions when purchasing one the same afternoon from a local store.”
Visitors were encouraged to join in with the performances from the resident Seaside Harmonies Community Choir and the Venton Vipers Belly dancers.
The event culminated with a reading from a member of the poetry group.
