Three young writers from Bede’s Prep School attended the final of the National Wicked Young Writers’ Competition at the Apollo Theatre in London.
Matilda Collins, Milly Gibson and Jake Menzies were three of just 100 children selected from many thousands of participants in the prestigious writing competition.
Gabby Roslin compered the event and the acclaimed children’s author, Cressida Cresswell, presented the prizes.
Cast members from the spectacular musical Wicked recited the winning pieces; there were also performances from the musical and a writing workshop with a popular children’s poet.
The school was both surprised and delighted when Matilda Collins (pictured above) was announced as the winner of the eight to 10-year-old category with her entry, Night Step.
Judges described her piece as sensitive, thought-provoking and moving.
Matilda was justly rewarded for her efforts with a certificate signed by Michael Morpurgo and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.
She also received the Wicked Young Writer Awards Anthology and a ticket to experience the Wicked cast in performance with her friends and family.
In addition, she has won £50 book token to spend herself and £100 worth of books for the Bede’s school library.
Staff and fellow pupils have congratulated Matilda.
