A team of babies from Eastbourne Water Babies will be making a splash for cash in their classes to raise money for the Splashathon, a fundraising event for baby charity Tommy’s.

On July 8 and 9, babies and toddlers learning to swim will be sponsored to undertake water-based challenges to fund vital research into stillbirth, premature birth and miscarriage.

Splashathon is also supported by Peppa Pig as Tommy’s is her official charity partner.

The classes at Martello Beach, run by Kelly Lockwood, will see babies from five months old to four years of age, being set a variety of fun challenges that they’ve never completed before.

It could be swimming through a hoop, or gathering floating balls, or even swimming underwater.

This year, there’s also a pirate fancy dress theme with swashbuckling bandanas and fake moustaches expected to be in the mix along with Captain Jack Sparrow-style hats. The aim is to raise £5,000 towards a national total for the charity.

Water Babies is hoping to smash its previous national fundraising record of £491,000.

Everyone can get involved by sponsoring these charitable local tots.

You can sponsor the little ones by visiting www.justgiving.com/Waterbabies-East-Sussex-Tunbridge-Wells-2015 to donate.

It is also possible to donate on a mobile phone by texting IGRO69 with the amount you would like to donate e.g. £10 to 70070.

The money raised will help fund a new, fourth research centre in 2016, to focus on early miscarriage.

One in four UK parents lose a baby during pregnancy or birth and 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year.

Kelly Lockwood, franchisee of Eastbourne Water Babies, said, “Splashathon helps to raise funds for a really important cause, as well as being a lot of fun for everyone involved.

“We plan to make 2015 a record breaking year in terms of funds raised and can’t wait to see the children in action at Martello Beach, splashing about and having fun, all in the name of charity.

“We hope the local community will dig deep to sponsor the children taking part.”

Jane Brewin, chief executive of Tommy’s, said, “Splashathon has become such a fixture in our calendar and it’s always great to hear how much fun everyone has.

“Its success is down to Water Babies and its clients throwing their weight behind it and showing a real passion for our cause.

“We’d like to thank the franchisee and all the families for taking part and helping Tommy’s to save more babies’ lives.”

The Splashathon is also sponsored by Huggies Little Swimmers.
