MORE than 1,250 runners battled biting gales to run the Eastbourne Half Marathon on Sunday.

Athletes from as far as Belgium set off from Princes Park at 10.15am in freezing conditions to complete the 13-mile course around the town. A record number of entrants pounded along the seafront, up through Meads and round Sovereign Harbour.

Coming in first place, in a breath-taking 1:14.18, was James Baker of Chichester Runners and Athletics Club and ironman Yvette Grice of Team Bodyworks XTC finished first among the women in 1:25.24.
