More than 50 firefighters are currently tackling a blaze at a thatched cottage on the A22 close to the K2 restaurant at Polegate.

The A22 southbound is closed as fire crews from Eastbourne, Hailsham, Herstmoncuex, Lewes and Heathfield try to control the fire which has ripped through the building between the popular Indian restaurant and a Calor Gas store. Around 300 animals including horses, dogs and cats have been rescued from the rear of the property and are safe.

Incident commander for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Mark Rist said the occupants had been led to safety after the alarm was raised by passing motorists on the A22 shortly before 6.30pm tonight (Wednesday evening).

Further updates are expected soon.
