Plans are in the pipeline to keep the Eastbourne town centre market open throughout the year on Wednesdays and Sundays.

But organisers say it will not include the extension up the seafront end of Terminus Road and instead will only see traders set up in the next stretch of Terminus Road by Debenhams and up to TJ Hughes.

Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce boss and Town Team representative Christina Ewbank said this week, “We would like the market to remain open throughout the year this year on both Wednesday and Sunday but, as it is quieter I’m afraid it will not include the extension in Terminus Road seafront end after October 1.

“We plan to reopen the seafront end from April 1 to September 30 next year.”

Market officials also want to see the Wednesday and Sunday markets to continue throughout the year between Debenhams and TJ Hughes including January, February and March 2015.

Miss Ewbank said, “We will review these opening dates as the weather and demand changes but it is our intention to keep going all year.

“Many thanks to everyone for all their support since we took the market over in March; it has been very successful throughout the spring and summer.”

A Christmas Market is also planned during the forthcoming Stars and Ice Party to coincide with the switching on of the Christmas lights each year and an Airbourne Market on the Saturday and Sunday in August with potentially a market on Thursday and Friday of Airbourne too.

The market in Terminus Road has stall holders selling local produce including cheeses, cakes, fruit and vegetables, fish and meat, pies, jewellery, crafts; homeware, children’s toys, garments, gifts and books.

The market was given the green light by Eastbourne Borough Council in May 2012 and set up for the first time later that year, in August.
