Two local charities received an early Christmas present as they were presented with a donation from the bucket collection held at Airbourne earlier this year.

The Eastbourne Samaritans and Macmillan Cancer Support will each receive a cheque for £4,183 – money donated from the bucket collections that took place over all four days of this year’s airshow.

The collection, run by the Eastbourne Hospitality Association and the Rotary Clubs of Eastbourne, helps to fund the flying displays each year at the show with 30 per cent of the proceeds being donated to local charities.

The cheques were presented by the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Mike Thompson on Wednesday, December 4, at a thank you event held for the charities and the many volunteers who ran the collections.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Mike Thompson said, “It is a pleasure to be able to hand over this money to these two charities who do such great work in Eastbourne.

“Our thanks go out to the many volunteers who made this year’s airshow such a success, from bucket collectors to safety boat volunteers, and of course the members of the public who so willingly donated.”

Local bus operator Stagecoach Buses sponsored the administrative operation of the collection, with volunteers collecting money along the seafront during all four days of the airshow.

The remaining 70 per cent of funds from the collection will go towards the continuation of Airbourne, one of the most popular seaside airshows in the country.

Thousands of visitors descended upon the seafront for this year’s show, with Thursday and Sunday being some of the busiest days on record. As a result, a huge £27,000 was donated via bucket collections, with further funds coming from the sale of programmes.

Airbourne fans can still donate online for the 2014 show. For more information on Airbourne or to make a donation visit www.eastbourneairshow.com.
