The air ambulance and emergency services were called to Birling Gap yesterday afternoon (Monday) after an elderly man collapsed on the beach.

Coastguards, police and paramedics rushed to the beach after reports at 4.30pm that a man had been taken poorly after coming out of the sea on the beach below the Birling Gap pub.

An ambulance spokesperson said passers by as well as doctors gave the man CPR and the air ambulance was also scrambled.

The man was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital by ambulance.

A spokesperson at Sussex Police said, “Police were called to a report of man having a medical episode on the beach at Birling Gap, East Dean.

“A doctor performed CPR on the man and resuscitated him before he taken to hospital by ambulance.”
